Kanchipuram vs. Banarasi: a working guide for buyers

A Kanchipuram is woven in Tamil Nadu, on a pit loom, in mulberry silk, with a contrast border that is sewn together with the body using a technique called the korvai. The pallu is heavy. The saree is heavy. It is the saree of a Tamil wedding.
A Banarasi is woven in Varanasi, often in a silk-Georgette blend, with brocaded zari in jangla, bel, or jhallar patterns. The drape is softer. The pallu is usually lighter. It is the saree of a North Indian wedding, and increasingly of any wedding.
If you can own only one, and you are in South India, buy the Kanchipuram. If you are dressing for a North Indian wedding, buy the Banarasi. If you are dressing for a cousin’s roka in Bengaluru, either will do.
